How do I Become a Member?
If you live, work, worship or go to school in Arlington or Mansfield or have an eligible family member, you are eligible for membership at Security One Federal Credit Union (SOFCU). New members are required to open a savings account with a minimum deposit of $25. Once you’re a member, you’ll have access to all the other products and services offered by SOFCU. And, our policy is “once a member, always a member,” so even if you change jobs, retire, or move away, your credit union membership continues and you continue to enjoy the benefits.
What is a Credit Union?
Credit unions are not-for-profit financial cooperatives that are owned by the people who use them and governed by a volunteer Board of Directors
They exist to provide safe, convenient places for members to save money and get loans at reasonable rates. You must be a member to use credit union services, which generally means you have a basic “share” or savings account with a minimal deposit. Members of a credit union generally share something in common, such as where they work, live, or go to church. When we work together as member-owners, we have more control over our fees, rates, products and services. We also have a strong voice in government, which helps protect our financial rights and those of future generations.
How is a Credit Union Different From a Bank?
Banks are owned by groups of stockholders whose interests include earning a healthy return on their investments. This means they often charge higher fees and interest rates to customers. Since credit unions are not-for-profit and are member-owned, earnings are returned to the members in the form of higher dividends, lower rates and lower fees. Our services and membership programs have received top tier ratings and reviews. You can see the following websites to take a look at our reviews and rankings here, here, here and here.
